Eremo delle Carceri is a hermitage in Assisi, Italy — a place where St Francis of Assisi often withdrew for prayer and solitude. It is a place where I have myself enjoyed profound and unforgettable moments of prayer.

This painting is my interpretation of a photograph I took there—a simple door at Carceri.

I am drawn to doorways. To me, they are an invitation to step into places I have not entered, to see what I have not yet seen. Above all, they hold the possibility of encountering the Lord in the person waiting on the other side.
