Choosing My Path is a personal response to being at a crossroad in my life. It portrays having to choose between pursuing the creative life committedly or staying on what the world considers the more conventional path.
The choices open to me are rooted in history, life experiences and desires; of who I have become, and who I desire to be. The circumstances are marked by the reality that is speckled with the lure of the many art forms I enjoy. Perhaps I can join the dots, integrate and combine these interests in inventive ways as a creative would.
The conglomeration of all the options can be confusing and messy and yet it is what I make of it that matters. Space, openness and silence to ponder, reflect and receive from the collective wisdom of the world is critical. I need only to choose in a way that puts me on a path towards wholeness, and to close the circle that leads towards a life lived with integrity and authenticity.
Whilst the piece is seemingly personal, it also speaks of the universal experience of every person having to make difficult choices every day in an increasingly diverse, complex and conflicted world.
The use of mixed media adds a richness to the piece. It is the ideal vehicle for communicating my interest in the profound truth of what it means to be fully human and fully alive, the basis for my decisions and that things are never as simple as it seems. There is no need to hold back and to hide, I can simply be me.
