ASIRVATHAM 2.0 – Completeness in every unfinished story

You are warmly invited to the launch of ASIRVATHAM 2.0

📅 Saturday, 6 September, 10:00 AM
📍 Punggol Library, Level 1

ASIRVATHAM 2.0 is an exhibition that invites you to feel, to understand, and to walk beside the autism community.

The word Asirvatham translates to blessings in English. Caregivers and artists have come together to tell stories and create art that celebrate the truth that care is not about perfection, but about presence. It reflects the mutual blessings within families caring for loved ones with autism: the caregivers who selflessly nurture, and the children who enrich their families’ lives. This exhibition calls upon society to extend its blessings — to embrace and celebrate individuals with autism and all disabilities, so that together, we may create a truly inclusive community.

Of all the art projects I have been involved in this year, ASIRVATHAM 2.0 is the one that has made being an artist most worthwhile and meaningful. Through my participation, I had the privilege of getting to know Balaji, a devoted caregiver to his son and family. His acute sense of life’s purpose, steadfast faith, and deep peace of mind are truly inspiring. I walk away humbled, bearing both the responsibility and the honour of telling his story.

At my first meeting with Balaji, I brought along some art materials to our session. As an abstract artist who deeply values personal mark-making, I wanted him and his son to be directly involved in the painting I would create. I invited Balaji to write and draw as he shared his stories. He also shared many photographs of his son’s work. The sketches, symbols, and words he offered became rich material for me to reflect on later in my studio. At first, I felt daunted — we come from very different backgrounds, and I was anxious about representing him well. But in distilling everything down to the message that mattered most to Balaji — to Love All — I found our shared humanity to be the bridge.

This experience has taught me that as an artist, I must listen deeply, carefully, and respectfully.

By joining us, you make this event more meaningful. Your presence encourages the spirit of hope and resilience that ASIRVATHAM 2.0 stands for.

All are welcome!

P.S.  Do check back here after the launch for a viewing of the painting I created for Balaji’s family.
