Spirit Speak: When Song, Prayer and Art Align

Spirit Speak: When Song, Prayer and Art Align

Do you have a song you listen to every single day—or even several times throughout the day?

I do. The music I listen to tends to move in seasons.

Right now, Spirit Speak by Austin French and Joscelyn French has been my song for most of this year. It has become my prayer at the start of each painting session: my call to the Holy Spirit to inspire me and work through me.

It feels fitting that one of my paintings carries the same name as the song. Spirit Speak came together quickly, almost effortlessly. Swirls of soft pinks, golds, and light yellows move across the surface like breath or wind. The words “Spirit blow, Spirit speak, I want to receive you” are etched into the flow, echoing the prayer that guided its making. In that moment, I felt no need for control or overthinking. I was completely open—cooperating with the Spirit in a way that felt deeply blessed.

The story of how Spirit Speak found its rightful owner was just as inspired. A friend reached out, looking for a retirement gift for a colleague. I asked him to describe the person in three words. His reply: hardworking, humble, and soft-spoken. Without hesitation, I recommended Spirit Speak.

Later, my friend told me that when the painting was presented—together with the song—the recipient was moved to tears.

These alignments do not happen every day. But when they do, they remind me why I make art: to stay in tune with the Spirit, and to offer work that speaks to the soul.

What about you? Is there a song, a prayer, or a piece of art that helps you open your heart to something greater than yourself?
